Die Verlore Bokooi 2020 x6

Winemaker: Lukas van Loggerenberg
Bottles: 9,200
Blend: Merlot 23%, Petit Verdot 21%, Shiraz 21%, Tannat 19%, Cabernet Sauvignon 16%

Age of vines: 20 years

Yield (t/ha): 10

°Balling at harvest: 23.2

Alcohol (%/vol): 14%

Total acid (g/l): 5.3

Residual sugar (g/l): 4.1

pH: 3.73

Total SO2 (mg/l): 61

Vinification: Grapes were destemmed and punched down once a day during spontaneous fermentation. Gentle and minimal handling ensures tannins stay soft and rounded so that focus falls on the fruit. After fermentation, grapes were lightly pressed and moved to old French oak the next day. Matured in oak for 10 months and minimal SO2 added before bottling in November 2020.

Tasting notes: The ample Tannat and Petit Verdot components make for the darkest Bokooi to date. Great depth on the nose with black fruits, liquorice and spice that linger on a lengthy palate with fully rounded, soft tannins. Be warned, true to its name, this bokkie will disappear before you know it. Share with friends around a fire, especially with some Lowerland reds beef biltong at hand.

Note on the label: Our logo was inspired by the unique cross stitch embroidery samplers by Riza Coetzee that grace the walls of the Lowerland farmhouse. Die Verlore Bokooi’s cross-stitch sampler inspired label (by Fanakalo Studios) tells the story of the Prieska region in exquisite detail. The name “Prieska” comes from the Korana words beris+gab – place of the lost she-goat (In Afrikaans: plek van die verlore bokooi). Elements in the label include the fort built on a hill overlooking Prieska constructed from unpolished tiger’s eye mined in the area; the distinctive “Wonderdraai” turn in the Orange River and local fauna and flora – kudu, bat-eared foxes, blue goslings, doves, sociable weavers nests, aloes, quiver trees and dung beetles.
